Sashi Sushi - Manhattan Beach

So I 've got 'a thing' for whenever I try a restaurant - at a new italian place I go for the spaghetti and meatballs, at a burger joint it's a bacon cheeseburger. When I try a new sushi place I gotta get a spicy tuna roll. And this place brought out the most bad-ass one I've ever had. Everything else was awesome too by the way - like the perfectly cooked dual edamame appetizer, one cold and salted, the other hot and seasoned with indian spices (so good!). The restaurant features an incredibly sophisticated sake menu which is arranged by season.  The entire cut roll menu is excellent, we tried as many as we could eat, and they were all amazing. And lastly I'd recommend saving a bit of room for the completely indulgent bento box dessert sampler.

Sashi Sushi is nestled in the Metlox Center on the corner on Manhattan Beach Blvd and Ardmore in Manhattan Beach, CA. The staff is totally on point, and the management actually cares about the quality of the restaurant's service. Not the kind of thing you see much of these days. At the top of this food chain stands the executive chef, Makoto Okuwa. The originality of his menu, the complexity of ingredients and flavors and the brilliant artistry of the presentations are clear expressions of the mastery of his craft.

Friday and Saturday nights this place goes off in large part because of the bar at Sashi, which  is a welcome addition to Metlox - where the night scene was getting a little crowded at the nearby Shade Hotel. To complement the incredible selection of Sake and Saketini drinks, Sashi has a great selection of Scotch, and they're one of the few places that serves my new favorite gin - Hendrick's (best served shaken with cucumber), and my wife's new favorite vodka - Veev (she get's it in a Mojito).

Bottom line is that this place is totally worth it. I'm absolutely looking forward to getting back there soon.

iPhone = Blog?

my shiny new iPhone: as good a reason as any to finally log in to the blogosphere.

it's been a while since i've geeked out as hard as i did this past sunday. that's me, sitting outside the manhattan village mall around 9am sunday morning (i got there at 7:30a - about 4 hours before the apple store was scheduled to open). this picture was taken by the dude who was sitting next to me - with his 1st Gen iPhone, which he then used to email me the picture.

i brought a folding chair, a big coffee mug, and my laptop. I passed the time by transferring all the old junk off my treo.

stay tuned for future updates. i'm planning to post about some of my past and future travels, movie and restaurant reviews, plenty of random tangents, and of course, some tips and tricks for sketchup and google earth.
